Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Electric Furnaces

(But Were Afraid To Ask)

According to the U.S Department of Energy, Electric Furnaces can be a good fit for a home addition if it is not easy to add onto the existing heating system.  It can be beneficial to use zone heating, adding more heat to the rooms that you live in, when you are in them.  Electric furnaces and boxed electric heaters can be turned on, or programmed to turn on when you are in the room and shut off when you are out of the room.

It makes sense to only heat the areas that you are in.  Adding electric heaters in rooms will allow you to turn down your main furnace settings and simply put the extra heat of an electric heater where you need it, when you need it.  Please note that you still need to keep your cooler parts of the home warm enough to avoid freezing pipes.

An electric heater is made up of three parts

  1. The Container:  can be a simple plastic or steel container or more elaborately themed to appear as a fireplace or an old potbelly stove.
  2. The Blower:  the fan that moves the hot air from the heating elements to the room.
  3. The Heating Elements: Similar to what you find in a toaster or hairdryer.
