Electric Furnaces vs Gas Furnaces

Efficiency and Longevity

Between oil, gas and electric-gas is the most efficient, at more than 95 percent.   Electric furnaces don’t even come close to this. Electric furnaces do have the edge when it comes to longevity. While gas furnaces typically need replacing after 15 years, electric furnaces will last for 20 to 30 years.

Installation and Running Costs

Purchasing an electric furnace is high than that of a gas furnace.  Gas is a lot cheaper in running costs in comparison to using electricity to heat the air in the furnace.  An electric furnace is a lot easier to install, no venting required or hooking up to the gas supply, just plug it in and turn it on.

Safety

Electric Furnaces are as safe as any other electric appliance.  The closest comparison would be a toaster or toaster oven; just keep the burners clean of debris.  Electric furnaces don’t make any fumes, because they don’t light any gas.  A gas furnace comes with the low risk of carbon monoxide poisoning or explosion, if not maintained properly.

Maintenance

Maintenance on a gas furnace is critical.  Carbon Monoxide poisoning is a serious threat if a gas furnace is not checked by a qualified professional at least once a year.  Electric furnaces don’t need as much maintenance and if missed efficiency is the main issue, not safety,
